What you will learn

Foundations of Documentary Filmmaking

Equipment

The seminar will use a variety of equipment in the production process. We highly recommend bringing your own laptop if possible. If you have any film making equipment you will be able to indicate within the application what you plan to bring.

1- Story Development

Dive into the art of story development with a spirit-led approach, learning to craft compelling narratives that resonate deeply with audiences. Emphasis e creating stories that reflect your values and honour both personal and others' experiences. Explore techniques to identify and structure powerful stories, ensuring they convey a clear and impactful message. Develop skills to transform raw ideas into engaging and memorable narratives, fostering a connection that reflects both authenticity and empathy.

2- Interview Techniques:

Master essential interview techniques with a spirit-led mindset to draw out genuine and compelling personal stories. Learn how to ask insightful questions, create a comfortable atmosphere, and capture authentic responses. This hands-on training will help you build rapport with interviewees ensuring that each person’s story is heard and valued, and extract valuable insights that enhance your documentary’s depth and authenticity.

3- Mini Project:

Apply your newfound skills to a mini project where you'll create a short documentary from start to finish. This hands-on experience will involve story development, filming, and editing. Receive feedback from experts to refine your work, and showcase your project to peers, demonstrating your growth, creativity and the importance of each story.

Bio:

Jonathan and Johanneke de Jong, with Youth with a Mission, lead the School of Documentary Film at YWAM Harpenden in England. Originally from the Netherlands and Brazil, they transitioned into media 11 years ago. Jonathan, with a background in Physical Education, and Johanneke, a former nurse who worked with teenage mothers in Brazil, have dedicated themselves to using media to spread hope.

They have taken their Documentary Film Seminar to various locations around the world, passionately teaching young creatives to tell stories of transformation. With a deep commitment to storytelling, they believe that every story matters. Jonathan and Johanneke look forward to sharing their

experience and heart for people with seminar participants in Cornwall, inspiring and supporting their creative journeys.
